SANTANDEUROPA
It’s the concept behind the actions planned for the preparative phase of Santander’s candidature for European Capital of Culture 2016. The city’s hope of becoming European Capital of Culture is currently expressed through a participative game based on Europe. The city has been divided into 27 areas corresponding to 27 countries of the European Union. For example, a resident of Cueto will fictitiously assume French citizenship; a resident of Tetuán will become Bulgarian, whilst residents of the neighbourhood of Barrio Pesquero will be Italians and those living in Monte, Swedish. By assuming a new identity and sharing the culture of another country, Santander’s 183,466 residents will have the opportunity to get involved in part of a program aiming to favour cultural interchange between the countries of the European Union. The initiative will be inaugurated on 2nd January with the hoisting of 27 flags from 27 countries of the European Union in their designated areas of the city.
